I’m starting a blog!

The Three Sisters - Deschutes National Forest

For years as a trail and ultrarunner, I have enjoyed the blogs of others. It has given me a feeling of community, inspiration, and adventure. In addition, it has become an opportunity for me to research and explore new routes and prepare for races through race and trip reports. That said, I have never really been inspired to write myself. I was always scared that it would be “just another trail running blog” and creativity isn’t necessarily my forte.

My mental and physical perspective to trail running completely changed on July 25, 2020 as I was 23 miles into a circumnavigation of The Sisters in central Oregon. To put it simply, I tripped on a rock and before I even landed on the ground, I had ruptured my patellar tendon, the tendon that connects the knee bone to the shin.

With the injury came a search and rescue operation, an emergency room visit, and a surgery up to this point, as well as some tears shed and certainly a few frustrating days with many more to likely come.

I’ve realized that with the amazing world of trails and nature that surround us, we rarely appreciate and understand the perspective that comes with a devastating injury, one that at the time of this writing is projected to be a 12-month recovery back to trail running.

My goal and hope from this is that people can take some lessons from what I’ve learned but also to appreciate what we have each and every day and enjoy the gifts that we get from travel, nature, running, or any of the other little things we so often take for granted. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure!
